Opinion: Returning to basics is the best path forward for Michigan's schools

Michigan’s education system is at a crossroads. For too long, we’ve been told that our K-12 schools are failing because we don’t spend enough money. However, both the data and the experience of parents across our state tell us something different — we’re not seeing improvements because we’ve abandoned accountability, transparency and competition.We hear it from families all across Michigan: they want schools that teach the basics, respect their values and prepare their children for the future. As leaders who care deeply about Michigan’s future, it’s time to focus on the fundamentals and put students first in our education system. That starts by embracing bold reforms that empower families, elevate quality and reward results.This year’s House Republican budget proposal reflects those values. It cuts wasteful spending, eliminates taxpayer-funded political activism in our schools, and makes smart investments to support both students and educators. But budget leadership alone won’t fix the deep-rooted challenges in our schools. We must go further.
